If you have kids, waffles are always a regular meal in the breakfast rotation. I’m not sure why, but I didn’t have a waffle maker for the longest time and would buy the boxed ones. If I knew how easy it was to make, I would’ve bought a waffle maker sooner.
Waffle Ingredients
This basic waffle recipe uses ingredients that are staples in any kitchen pantry…really. Nothing fancy, just simple ingredients for a simple breakfast idea. The picture above shows sugar, but I’ve started leaving out the sugar since the syrups and topping we use have enough sugar in them to make the waffles sweet.
How to Make Waffles
To make these waffles, melt the butter and set this aside for later. Add the remaining wet ingredients into a large bowl and whip together. Next, sift together the dry ingredients and add it into the wet mixture. Mix until combined, add the melted butter into the batter and mix.
Okay, don’t judge this recipe on my malformed waffle. My first waffle is usually not the best, but they always get better after my first one…promise.
To get a nice round waffle shape, use a measuring cup and add about a 1/2 cup of batter to the waffle maker. Cook just until the waffle is golden brown and you don’t see a lot of steam coming off of the waffle maker. You should get around 5-6 waffles.
Tip – Place the waffles onto a cookie rack in an oven set at 100 – 125°F. This will keep the waffles warm and crisp until the last waffle is cooked. Just don’t leave them in the oven for long or you may get giant sized waffle pucks.
Once all the waffles are cooked, serve with your favorite toppings.
To freeze: Let waffles cool to room temperature. Place in a single layer on a parchment-lined cookie sheet till solid. Place into a Ziplock freezer bag. To reheat, pop into the toaster.
What do you top your waffles with?
Basic Waffle Recipe - Simple Breakfast
How to make basic waffles for a simple breakfast idea. Top with your favorite condiments.
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 Large eggs
- 6 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (can substitute with maple extract or half vanilla/half maple extract)
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Turn on waffle maker. Sift together flour, salt and baking soda. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine milk, vanilla and eggs. Mix well.
- Add the flour mixture into the milk mixture. Mix well. Add the melted butter.
- Spray waffle maker with a light coat of cooking spray. Pour a little more than 1/2 cup of batter onto your single waffle maker. Spread mix around to coat the waffle maker. Close the waffle maker and cook until golden brown. Serve with your favorite toppings.
Notes
I have left out sugar in the mix since we usually eat this with syrup and fruits, which have enough sugar in them. The vanilla extract can be substituted with maple extract if eating with maple syrup for a more intense maple flavor.

I was skeptical because the waffles do come out really pale but they taste so much better than the sugar-laced versions. Whatever topping is put on top sweet or savory is made better by the waffle…thank u so much. My new favorite.
I’m loving this! Pinned and tweeted! I always love your creations, thanks for sharing this with us! I hope to see you tonight at 7 pm. Lou Lou Girls
I had a waffle maker for years. One day I was in a cleaning mood and got rid of the waffle iron and my ice cream maker because I didn’t use them very often. Now I wish I had it back. Your waffles look delicious. I like mine with butter and syrup, but my husband likes peaches and whipped cream along with his syrup.
One must always have a tried and true waffle recipe as this one!
Erlene, I also just recently bought my own waffle iron. I just didn’t want to store it in my kitchen unless I would use it. I have LOVED it since I made the purchase. These waffles look delicious! I have also started leaving out the sugar in them. Who needs it?
I need to get a waffle maker, these sound delicious, perfect for a weekend family breakfast!
I enjoy making waffles for the Grands when they visit but I must confess, I cheat and use boxed mix. I didn’t realize it was so easy to make your own! I’ll give your recipe a try. 🙂
