This product was given to me by Brand Backer and KISS InstaWave to review. All opinions are my own.
I grew up when there was only one type of curling iron , big hair perms were “in”, and everyone wore shoulder pads to balance out their hair. Yes, yes, I’m that old. Anyway, fast forward some 20+ years… perms and shoulder pads are “out”, but curling irons are still “in” with modern updates.
The KISS InstaWave is a new type of curling iron with lots of bells and whistles. It’s a fully automatic tangle-free curler that will create beautiful, long-lasting curls with just the touch of a button! Now you can have beautiful salon style curls without being a pro.
I must admit, that when I first took the revolutionary KISS InstaWave out of the box, my initial thought was, “What the heck am I supposed to do with this?!”. I wasn’t sure if it was a weapon or a curling iron. I mean, it had the bones of a regular curling iron, but it also had these strange protruding prongs around the bottom of the barrel. Intimidating to say the least.
First thing I did was to thoroughly read the owner’s manual. There were a few things that are worth noting:
- Ensure hair is clean and completely dry before using this curling iron
- The entire diamond ceramic barrel (top to bottom) will get EXTREMELY hot in a few seconds, even on the low setting
- The red indicator light will turn blue when the iron is ready to use
- Low/high temperature setting (maximum temperature of 420 degrees)
- Features a Curl Dial with left/right curl directions
- Must hold the barrel vertically when curling hair
- 90 minute auto shutoff technology
After plugging in the KISS InstaWave, it started to make a humming noise, which according to the manufacturer is normal and will happen when the iron is heating up. There is also a red light that indicates the iron is heating and will turn blue within a few seconds to indicate the iron is ready to use. Seriously, I couldn’t believe how quickly this iron heated up…it really was ready in a few seconds.
Once the iron was heated, I prepped my daughter’s hair with some heat protectant and brushed out her hair. As you can see, she has very thick and frizzy hair.
Since my daughter’s hair is very long and THICK, I found it best to start curling her hair half way down the length to get all of her hair onto the barrel and manually move the iron towards her head. This was the best way for me to fit all of her hair onto the barrel. I probably could have started closer to her head and just moved the iron vertically down too. After a short learning curve, I had almost half of my daughter’s hair fully curled. It was fairly easy and it actually smoothed out her frizzy hair.
AMAZING…right?! Look at those curls. I made each of these curls in a few seconds using the low setting. I didn’t even need to use any hair spray and these held their shape. My daughter’s hair was still curly the next day! After trying out the curler on my daughter’s hair, I decided to be brave and use it on my hair. My hair is straight and not as thick as my daughter’s hair and it curled just fine.
Using either hand, I was able to use the curl dial to easily make curls that twisted to the left or right. However, I did have a few difficulties using it on my own hair:
- The shorter length hair near my face was difficult to curl because I couldn’t get the barrel close enough to my head for the iron to get a good grasp on my hair
- Difficult to keep the iron vertical and curl the hair in the back
- Gets a little heavy in the hand (this weighs more than a regular iron)
So what’s my verdict on the KISS InstaWave? There is a learning curve, but it’s just like any other new product that you try. You’ll have to play around with it a few times before you get the hang of it. Overall, the iron does exactly what it claims to do…make instant curls.
I think a lot of young girls would love to have this in their beauty kit and this would make a great gift for any fashionista.
The iron smell of hair burning and the outside is clean. How do I clean the InstaWave? Please response. Thank you
We haven’t had that problem. If you smell burning, I would stop using it and contact the company for assistance in that.
Wow! Amazing! It’s good to know that it works on thick, frizzy hairs. Also, the curler made her hair look shiny and less frizzy. I’ve come up with my own review on this one, too. And hope you guys would check it out on my website.
I purchased this from Target, after seeing it on TV wanted to get it that day so didn’t wait for it to be shipped. At first I was not impressed, and was thinking of returning it. However after a few more try’s and getting use to using it, I was in love with it, my hair while in Florida in the hot weather even stayed curled, I have long hair that after a short time with the curling iron it would go flat, but now I wake up and I still have curls from the day before. If you have purchased this give it a few try’s to get use to it you will to love it.
wow! your baby is beautiful!! Those curls look amazing when you are done! I have semi thick and extremely fine hair. Its a weird combo and curls NEVER want to stay in my hair. Seriously I will curl my hair and by the time I am done with it the side I started curling first is always half way out and I have to go back over it just to have the second side falling out by that time lol. Within a hour my hair will only have a slight flip to the bottom of it lol. its insane and drives me mad! I was told about a curling iron that sucks your hair inside the wand and would work on my hair..is that what this does or does it just wrap around the outside? I want to see this thing in action..you need a video lol! If you make a video and dont have a youtube I would gladly let you post it on mine just so I could see how it works hahaha. Anyway, thanks for linking up at Totally Terrific Tuesday last week! I am late getting around to everyone..such a busy week and so many awesome posts! Part is live until Sat night if you havent made it over yet (I havent had a chance to go through them yet..yikes)!! Have a wonderful weekend!!

This wand didn’t work with mine or my moms hair. However, your daughter and your hair turned out cute. I am glad you were able to get it to perform its magic. #ProductReviewParty
Wow, your daughter’s hair is gorgeous! The Kiss-instawave worked well with her hair. Since I have kinky hair this wand wouldn’t work for me. 🙁 #ProductReviewParty
My daughter’s hair is kinky and it worked for her. The iron actually helped straighten out all the frizz in her hair.
Perms, shoulder pads, wish I could forget??? Yes, Yes, and YES! This iron seems very cool. My daughter has extremely thick hair as well. We just might have to give this a try. Thanks for the excellent and humorous review. 🙂

Your daughters hair is just so cute! I am too glad that curler are still in, because thats what I got anyways. And it is easier and more fun to curl than to straiten.
Thanks Anna. She has really thick kinky hair and this curler actually smoothed out her hair when curling.
I hear you on the straightening. My oldest daughter gets up early or does her hair at night so she will have straight hair.
Your daughter’s hair turned out beautiful! I bet she had a big smile! I have seen this Kiss and wondered how well it worked. Glad you shared.
It was scary to use at first because I was so clueless on this all worked, but have finally got a handle on it. It curls REALLY fast…like in seconds.
Wonderful review. The curls were beautiful on both you and your daughter’s hair! Thanks for sharing your post at Together on Tuesday 🙂
Thanks Lisa. I’m really amazed at the new technology on these irons. Makes curling hair super easy.
