It’s half way through the month of August and I’ve dealt with the final stages of fixing a pipe leak, the oven going on the fritz, our dog hurting his paw, and the kids starting school. Oh, and there’s more crazy coming with my hubby’s weird work and coaching schedule starting this weekend. Now, I’m already a ‘forgetful’ eater, so when curveballs are added into my daily routine, I have a tendency to skip eating altogether. As a result, my hunger can turn into ‘hangry’ – hungry + angry with stress and mood swings thrown in too. And since nobody wants to be around a ‘hangry’ monster, especially my hubby, I’ve started following 5 tips to help beat hunger from turning into ‘hangry’ when life gets extra busy.
5 Tips to Help Beat Hunger From Turning Into ‘Hangry’
Eat Breakfast
I know we’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it’s true! Starting the day on an empty stomach is a surefire way to open the door for the ‘hangry’ monster. I used to think that I never had time to make myself a breakfast, but now I stock the fridge with make ahead breakfast meals or Lean Pockets for a quick morning meal. Yes, Lean Pockets aren’t just for lunch, I eat them in the mornings too!
Drink Something
Keeping hydrated between meals helps me avoid making unhealthy food choices or eating when I’m really dehydrated. If I start feeling hungry between meals, I first drink a glass of water, tea, or coffee. Also, if I’m on-the-go, I take a travel mug filled with tea or water to drink. If I don’t feel hungry 15 minutes after drinking, I know it’s not time for me to eat.
Have Snacks
Having a small snack between meals can also help beat hunger, but not just any kind of snacks. I try to keep my snacks healthy by eating lots of produce mixed with a bit of protein like an apple + peanuts, celery + peanut butter, soybeans, or tomatoes + cheese.
Don’t Skip Meals
Sometimes life gets busy, like my recent pipe leak situation. There were repairmen coming through my kitchen all day, which made it almost impossible to cook lunch. Like breakfast, skipping an afternoon meal can bring out the ‘hangry’ monster in me. Stocking up on premade meals like Lean Pockets is not only convenient, it doesn’t require any pots or pans and takes less than 2 1/2 minutes in the microwave!

Lean Pockets feature premium cuts of white meat chicken, hickory ham, beef, and pepperoni all wrapped in pretzel bread and whole grain crusts. In addition to the high quality meats, each Lean Pockets is made with 100% real cheese and contain no artificial flavors, which makes it a great option for recharging my mid-day energy drop.
Another great thing about Lean Pockets is the variety of flavors that are available. I’m able to satisfy almost any type of flavor craving – spicy, pizza, salty, cheesy, etc… Although, I have to admit that the Roasted Turkey Bacon & Cheese with a pretzel bread crust paried with a salad is my favorite. I mean, who doesn’t love a bacon, pretzel, and cheese combo?!
Lean Pockets Flavors –
- White Meat Chicken Jalapeno & Cheese with a pretzel bread crust (hubby’s favorite)

Chew Gum
Finally, chewing gum isn’t just for freshening my breath. If I’m out-n-about and don’t have access to snacks, chewing gum can give me the sensation that I’m eating a small meal. Therefore, gum has become one of my purse essentials and a hunger beating tool.
