My mom was a stylish lady and never left the home “undone”. She was always put together and had a daily routine of doing her hair and makeup, which included spraying herself with perfume. I remember how she always smelled like a fresh-cut flower and had fragrances scattered across her vanity.
Yesterday, I mentioned that my mother is no longer with us, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t still think about gifts for Mother’s Day. I’ve already posted the first part of my gift, Mother’s Day Vanity Jars, for storing makeup brushes and other items. Today, I’ll show you how to complete the Mother’s Day gift set with a DIY Frame Vanity Tray tutorial: the perfect way to gift to help corral old fragrances as well as present a new one!
Mother’s Day DIY Frame Vanity Tray Supplies:
- picture frame
- crochet lace
- burlap
- 2 cabinet handle packs
- screwdriver
- drill
- spray adhesive
- scissors
- ruler
- pen/pencil
- cardboard (optional)
- 150 grit sandpaper or palm-sander (optional)
- clear wax sealer (optional)
- tape (optional)
- felt furniture pads
- Get old cardboard and cut out a piece that will fit onto the backside of the frame.
- Trace around the handle. Mark handle holes by measuring from the middle of each hole and marking it on your template.
- Drill through the frame on the marked handle holes on your template.
You can also draw directly onto the backside of the frame, but I wanted to keep the back as clean as possible. Using a template allows for adjustments without adding anymore pencil markings onto the frame.
- Optional – If you want a distress look, remove the glass from the frame and sand the edges with a palm-sander or hand sand.
- Optional – Seal with a clear wax.
- Attach handles onto the frame.
- Cut a piece of burlap large enough to cover the inside of the frame.
- Remove the back of the frame and spray with adhesive.
- Lay the frame backing onto the cut burlap. Flip over and smooth out.
- Cut off any excess burlap edges.
- Insert the crochet lace onto the glass and place the burlap backing cover over it.
- Place felt pads onto handle screw heads and on the corners of the frame.
- Lock backing into place and flip the frame tray over.
Alright, we’re almost done with the vanity gift set. All we need to do is put everything together and add some special touches!
Since the tray is for fragrances, I had to include the new Coty Love2Love Bluebell + White Tea fragrance that I found at Walmart. This delicate feminine fragrance has top notes of Italian bergamot, blueberry white tea, and nectarine. The top notes mingle with middle notes of orange flower, bluebell flower, and jasmine sambac. Lastly, the bottom notes of cashmere wood, sheer musk, and white amber creates a calming feeling of being wrapped in love. Doesn’t this sound delicious smelling? Well, trust me, it is!
You can purchase this affordable indulgent Love2Love fragrances at participating Walmart stores on May 1, along with 4 other Love2Love fragrances. Just look for a special end cap that will feature this new fragrance and other Love2Love fragrances with a special $0.50 Love2Love gift bag.
I was lucky enough to get the very last bottle of Bluebell + White Tea fragrance. Doesn’t the packaging and beautiful floral bottle with a petal shaped cap match perfectly with the crochet lace on my gift set?
The fragrance box and bottle are beautiful, but I wanted to make it extra special by placing it inside one of the Mother’s Day Vanity Jars. Besides, part of the fun of presents is opening up the packaging to find another package to open. Now the gift is now complete! You can present mom with a beautiful handmade 3pc. Mother’s Day Vanity Gift Set that is filled with make-up brushes and a new fragrance.
What Love2Love fragrance would be your mom’s favorite? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Love your designs
Repurposing a picture frame into a tray is so practical, efficient and creative! I love the look you attained. Lace is one of my favorite table toppers. The glass topped tray will be so easy to keep clean too. Fragrance bottles often ruin wood surfaces. This idea works on so many levels and is lovely to boot! Nice work!
What a great idea to use a picture frame as a base for a tray. This would make a wonderful gift.
Erlene, you are so creative. This is a beautiful piece. I’m sure your Mom is thrilled.
This is so pretty, what a great gift!
These are so beautiful! My grandma used to make such fancyworks!
What a pretty tray! I have a little coffee station in my guest room. This would be a great addition to put mugs and spoons on!
Mother’s are special and this is a beautiful gift set. My mom has a morning routine she still goes through to this day with her makeup and hair, but she was never one to really wear purfume.
I have a couple frames that I bought to make trays from just haven’t done it yet. I love the way you decorated the jars too, they go perfectly with the tray.
This is such a lovely gift set. You are super creative. Since my Mom has been gone for a number of years, I try to find it a blessing to give a gift to someone else, for Mother’s day.
How beautiful, classy, and creative! Found you on the #homemattersparty! I know several ladies, including my own mom, who would LOVE this. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much hopping over. I you make some jars, let me know how they liked them.
These are beautiful. I’m sorry you mom won’t be with you this mothers day 🙁 Mom’s are the best. I can’t imagine loosing mine.
Thanks Amanda. It can be a little sad, but it’s nice that all the moms in the family had a chance to have a get together for Mother’s Day.
You are my inspiration for crafting because you are the most creative crafter I know. I absolutely love this. Those jars are adorable. I love the set.
My mother is gone also but I still have all of her perfume bottles arranged on the dresser in her room just like she left them. They give me fond memories.
Thanks Shirley. I like to keep things from my mom too. One of my favorite gifts was a recipe binder that my aunt put together of all the recipes my mom had collected over the years.
This us such a creative idea. I guess I have been finding new ways to use picture frames through various blog posts. I do not have a vanity tray so maybe I could make me one!
Zan it’s so easy to make. The great thing about using picture frames is that you can make it any size or shape you want by choosing different frames.
I just have to say that I’m a tray lover! I have them everywhere and I’m always drawn to trays every time I go shopping. I’ve never thought about making one myself. How very clever of you. It’s beautiful and I love the story you told about your mom always being put together. I want to make one!
I want to try all of those fragrances, too! I imagine they all smell really good.
I’ve just started liking trays. It’s such a pretty way to keep little bottles and stuff in one place. I found some really nice ones at the vintage market that I may have to go and pick up for my dd’s room.
And yes, all the fragrances smell really nice. My favorite is the Bluebell + White Tea since it has a subtle scent.
That’s soooo pretty. I remember those lace doilys; had one in my room from years back. Need to dig it out and see what I can do with it!
I think my Mom and my Mom-in-Law would love Fresh Rose + Peach and the new Bluebell + White Tea fragrances! They’d love these way to display them, too!
