It’s been awhile since I did a Pinterest Tested post, but I’m finally back with a Pinterest Tested #18! Today I’ll share with you my experience with DIY Freezer Smoothie Packs @Live Simply, Freezer Breakfast Burritos @Handle the Heat, and Deluxe Egg Salad @Mum’s the Word. See a theme here? All the recipes in this Pinterest Tested are focused on back to school meals.
DIY Freezer Smoothie Packs @Live Simply
I made a decision to make mornings easier for me by making some Make Ahead Back to School Breakfasts. Since my kids love smoothies, I decided to try making DIY Freezer Smoothie Packs from Live Simply. This recipe has over 7K pins and lots of good reviews.
Per the directions, I filled each sandwich sized Ziplock bag with chopped fruits and a handful of kale. This can be made with pre-frozen fruits, but I bought fresh fruits and chopped them myself. Once the bag contents are frozen, it’s easy to whip out and make a quick morning or snack smoothie.
The only change I had to make was doubling the amount of liquid added in the directions. One cup of liquid per a full bag of frozen fruit produced a smoothie that was extremely thick. In fact, my blender couldn’t even move the contents…it was that thick. I had to more than double the amount of liquid to 18-20 oz. and still got a thick drinkable smoothie. The plus side to doubling the liquid is one bag of fruits + 20 oz. of milk = 48 oz. or three 16 oz. servings. Since I have a large family, it’s nice to be able to get so much from a small bag of fruits.
Overall, these frozen packs are a hit with the kids. The kids like being able to grab a bag out and quickly dump everything into the blender for a quick breakfast or after school snack, while I like the ability to customize the contents of the bag and the option to add in vegetables.
Tips:
- Add 1-2 T. of honey to sweeten the smoothie
- Use vanilla almond milk for a sweeter flavored smoothie
- If you like eating smoothies with a spoon, use only 1 cup of liquid per smoothie fruit bag
Freezer Breakfast Burritos @Handle the Heat
This pin has over 16K repins! Freezer breakfast burritos was another recipe I tried to help make morning breakfast time quicker. These do require a little prep time, but I think it’s worth it.
The results:
I’ve actually made these twice since school has started. Since my kids are teens and they all have bottomless stomachs, I use the extra large size flour tortillas. I followed the directions, except I left out the onions (oldest son won’t eat it), only used 1/3 of a bell pepper, used cheddar, and added potatoes. I can make about 7-8 large tortillas with this recipe and the added potatoes.
Overall, this is a breakfast winner. It only takes about 2 minutes and 20 seconds to warm up these freezer breakfast burritios in a damp paper towel. Plus, I can customize the burrito filling to utilize leftovers too.
Tip:
- Add onion powder and garlic powder for added flavor
- For a change, use different types of cheese
- Use leftover meat to fill the burritos
Deluxe Egg Salad @Mum’s the Word
Keeping to the back to school theme meal theme, the next recipe I tried was the Deluxe Egg Salad @Mum’s the Word. This pin has over 8K pins.
I didn’t get to take photos of this one, but I wanted to share the results of this recipe. This one uses cream cheese and butter in the mix. There were mixed feeling from the family on the flavor of this egg salad mix -half the family liked this and the other half didn’t.
Overall, I liked the flavor of the mix and will probably keep the seasonings, but not use cream cheese or butter in the mix.
