Have you ever finished a project and then realized that it wasn’t quite right? Well, that’s what happened with my fall mantel. You see that frame in the picture above? It was okay, but I wasn’t really happy with it. I kept staring at it, until it finally hit me! I needed somewhere for my family to display all the things they are thankful for.
While we talk about all the things we are thankful for, we’ve never really written it down for display. Making a “give thanks” tree was something I’ve always wanted to do and this frame became our “Give Thanks Frame Board”, our version of a “give thanks” tree.
Supplies
- large frame
- various fabric strips – 6″ lengths – I used lace and painter’s drop cloth scraps
- twine
- 1 package of mini pine cones ornaments – from Dollar Store
- glue gun
- mini clothes pin
- colored paper – brown, green, orange
- scissors
- leaf template
- heavy-duty tape (optional)
Directions
- Remove the glass from the frame and set this aside, we won’t be using it.
- Using small dabs of glue, tack twine to the back of the frame in a zig-zag pattern. Let the glue completely dry before attaching anything to the twine.
- Take strips of fabric and tie pine cone ornaments onto the twine. Tie lace strips between the pine cone ornaments.
- Using a leaf template (I used my cookie cutter), trace the leaves onto colored paper and cut out.
- Pin the leaves onto the twine, spacing them out as you like.
- Cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover the front of the frame backing. Iron the fabric to remove wrinkles. Tape or glue this onto the backing. Insert into the frame.
- Now you have a completed “Fall Give Thanks Frame Board”.
You see that Pumpkin in front of the board? I plan to store all the kid’s leaves in it and read them each year. You can see how I made it from a plastic pretzel container here. Now I feel like my mantel is complete…for now. I’m sure I’ll find something else I want to change 🙂
