This is a totally unplanned blog post. The only reason I’m posting this is because my youngest son, who couldn’t make up his mind on trick-or-treating, informs me last night that he now wants to go. Really?!?! He gives me two days notice?!
Actually, he did mention that he was “thinking” about going as an Anbu, a Special Assassination and Tactical Squad member on the Naruto television show, but couldn’t he have decided sooner? Anway, the Anbu character looks like this…
Why couldn’t he have chosen to be a doctor, police officer, or any other easy to find $15 store costume? *Sigh* No, he has to chose a costume that you have to order and will not make it to our house in time. Besides, there was no way that I was paying $50 for an Anbu costume.
I know. I could have put my foot down and said, “Too bad, so sad. You’re going as whatever cheap costume I can find or throw together.”, but I just couldn’t do it. I know this will be his last year going out and I wanted it to be special.
So, what did I do? I whipped out my last two cereal boxes and started making his mask. “Say what?!”, you ask. Yes, you heard me…cereal boxes.
Remember early this week, I posted this Sugar Skull Masks from recycled boxes? Well, while these masks were nice, I needed to transform the flat boxes into something three-dimensional and more like the Anbu masks.
Updated 10/29/2019 – I used a Youtube video for making the base, but it has been removed/blocked due to copyright issues on the video.
Here are some masks to use for inspiration. I tried my best to copy the first mask.
Tip – Do not use this gray shiny type of tape as it doesn’t take paint well. It would be best to use regular masking tape or white tape.
Here is what his cereal box mask looked like after 20 minutes. Yeah, it’s pretty rough, but we’re getting somewhere 🙂
Another 10 minutes later and it’s starting to resemble an Anbu mask…don’t you think so? The mask is ready to get painted!
Of course, by the time we got to this stage, it was pretty late and it was time to pack it in for the night. So, while I know you’re just dying to see how this turned out, you can follow me on Instagram and follow along as I snap more photos of the whole process. Hopefully, I’ll be able to whip out the rest of the costume tomorrow too. Wish me luck!
