If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that my family loves to eat any type of bread. I don’t know what it is, but something about  fresh homemade bread gets them excited. The only problem with making fresh bread is that it can be a long process when making it with yeast…you know the first rise and second rise thing. Well, sometimes I just don’t have the time and my family doesn’t have the patience for me to make a yeast bread. So, I make a No Yeast Flat Bread as an alternative.

The best part of this recipe is that it’s super easy. This No Yeast Flat Bread recipe is a great basic recipe that you can build onto. You can add cheeses, fresh or dried herbs, spices, and more to add your own zing to it. Just play around until you get just the right taste that your family likes. For example, if you have herb butter, substitute that in place of the shortening or maybe use the herb butter to cook the flat bread. It’s really hard to mess this recipe up, so have fun with it.

No Yeast Flat Bread

Roll out Flat Bread

After mixing the dry and wet ingredients together, divide your dough into 16 equal round balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll and flatten each ball into approximately 5-6 inches wide circles.

*I added in California garlic powder seasoning with about 1/2 tsp. fresh garlic in this batch. I don’t measure when I add additional items. I just add a little of what ever the family feels like eating.*

No Yeast Flat Bread in pan

If you have a large griddle, you can use it to cook multiple flat breads at one time. I just used my pan and cooked the flat breads one at a time using just enough butter to coat the bottom of the pan. Cook on each side until you start to see the bread brown or bubble.

See, super simple, quick, and easy…my kind of recipe. It’ll take you no more than 45 minutes from beginning to end to make this No Yeast Flat Bread recipe. I hope you try it. What would you add in your No Yeast Flat Bread recipe?

Super quick and easy no yeast flat bread. You can easily add your own fresh spices & herbs to put your own special touch on this basic no yeast flat bread recipe.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 3 tablespoons shortening (optional)
  • 1 - 1 1/4 teaspoon salt (I use 1 tsp. if adding in cheese)

Directions

Step 1
Put all dry ingredients in the bowl and mix together. *If adding cheese or other fresh/dry ingredients, add it here*
Step 2
Add shortening and cut into dry ingredients. You should get pea sized or smaller bits of shortening in the mix.
Step 3
Add cold water and mix until a dough forms. If the dough is still too sticky, add a bit more flour till the dough pulls away from the bowl. Knead for 3-5 minutes.
Step 4
Break dough into 16 equal balls. On a lightly floured surface, roll out into thin circles. I make mines approximately 5-6 inches wide. The thinner you make these the better.
Step 5
Place a pan on medium heat and add a thin coat of butter or olive oil. Place bread circles in pan and cook until browned on each side.

  10. I think your bread looks great, like the expensive nanan bread in the store, I’m sure much better fresh baked,I used to bake 7-8 loaves of bread a week for my family of 6 and wish there had been recipes like this at that time. Thank you for stopping by this week and adding my little banner, I have also pinned one of the photos above to our Weekend Party Board.

Thanks again, enjoy your weekend, Karren

    1. I think your family will really like this quick recipe. I don’t know any good ciabatta recipes, but I may have to hit Pinterest up for some recipes to try. I’ve been testing Hawaiian Sweet bread recipes. Thanks for stopping by.

  13. Hi Erlene! So happy to see you around at The Yuck Stops Here! You are certainly missed. I love flat bread, and this certainly looks delicious. How do you think this would hold up on the grill? I know lots of people grill pizza/pizza crust, but I have never tried doing that, so I don’t know all the mechanics of it. Either way, I’m gonna have to try this one! HUGS

    1. Hi Cheryl! I miss the party too, but I haven’t been posting too many recipes lately. I hope to get back into the swing of things and start linking up more often. I don’t know how it would hold up on the grill as I’ve never tried it. I think it would work, but I’m thinking you would have to make it thicker so it won’t fall through the grill grates. I’ll give it a try next time and see what happens. I’m sure grilling this would give it a nice flavor. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  14. I had been looking for a no yeast bread so glad to see you share this recipe. And adding cheese! that makes it more fun 🙂 I would probably try first as per the recipe and then vary the spice maybe to coordinate with the meal. have a great weekend!
