Can you believe it’s time for another Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge?! I will admit, this month was a tough one for me. I really wanted to find something that would enhance my home or be useful. I can’t even tell you how many times I came home empty handed and almost pulled out of this month’s challenge. And finally, when I had just about lost all hope, I found a wood pineapple cut out at Savers. Ahhhh (sing this part), the thrifting fairy was on my side! I LOVE pineapples and knew it could easily be transformed into a decorative wood pineapple chalkboard!

- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

Wood Pineapple Chalkboard
Who in their right mind tosses out a perfectly beautiful wood pineapple board/hanging?! Well, whoever you are, thank you!

Supplies:
- chalkboard paint
- paint brush
- stencil sponge roller
- stencil spray adhesive
- paper
- pen/pencil
- scissors
- gold Sharpie pen
How to:
Before starting, wipe and clean the entire piece. I lightly scrubbed this with Dawn dish liquid to get rid of the sticky tack from the piece.
Skip this step if you do not want to have the wood show around the chalkboard center. You can paint the entire pineapple bottom with chalkboard paint.
- Trace around the outside bottom of the pineapple. Cut out.
- Determine how much wood edge you want and draw a dotted edge along the inside of the cut out.
- Cut along the dotted line.
- Dry fit the piece onto the pineapple and make size adjustments.
- Spray stencil adhesive on the back of the cut out. Let dry till it is sticky.
- Place cut out onto the pineapple.
- Using a stencil sponge roller, paint with a thin coat of chalkboard paint (do not apply too much paint or it will seep under the template). Let dry for 30 minutes. Repeat with second coat. Remove template and clean up any paint that seeped under the template with a damp paper towel. Let dry for 24 hours.
You can stop here. But I love a little color and decided to paint the top of the pineapple too. I wanted some of the wood to show through the cut details on the leaves and tried not to get too much paint into the carvings.
- Paint a light coat of green onto the top leaves of the pineapple. Let dry. Repeat until you get the desired color you want.
- Apply gold Sharpie to the edges of the pineapple leaves. Let dry.
- Optional – apply gold Sharpie to the outside bottom edge of the pineapple and around the chalkboard area.
- Prep the chalkboard surface for writing by covering it with chalk and then wiping it off.
Now, add your quote and display!

So cute! What a great idea to make a chalkboard! I am always amazed at some of the things that end up at the thrift store, but I too am grateful to find a treasure or two to make my own!
I am not really good at DIY stuffs but I love decorating my house, especially my daughter’s room with handmade decoration. I will try my best. Hope the outcome will be good.
