Simple Football Cupcakes

Only a few more weekends and it’s the big game day! The grocery stores have finally put out their game day party supplies and excitement for the big game day is finally in the air. I know I’m excited because I’ve already picked up my game day party supplies and started planning my menu. Earlier this week, I shared the appetizers I’m planning to make – 3 Game Day Finger Foods. And today, I’m sharing a fun way to keep the football theme going with Simple Football Cupcakes.

The idea for this cupcake came from the grocery store bakery. I could have just bought them, but I’m one of those people that look at things and think…I can make these myself! So that’s exactly what I did!

Simple Football Cupcakes

Green frosting - Simple Football Cupcakes

To keep things simple, I used premade frosting & cake mix to make this cupcake. Of course, if you have a favorite frosting and cupcake recipe, feel free to use that too.

Okay, so let’s get to it. Once all the cupcakes are baked and cooled, it’s time to start decorating the tops with cute footballs. The first thing I did was to color my whipped cream cheese frosting green to represent green grass. I used about 10 drops of green food coloring to 1/2 the container of frosting. Mix well and add a thin layer of green frosting with a butter knife to the tops of all the cupcakes.

Next, fill a pastry bag with a star tip (a large round tip can be substituted) with chocolate frosting. Then, starting at one end of the cupcake, start frosting in the shape of a football until you reach the other end of the cupcake. The shape will basically be a series of s-shape movements across the top of the cupcake. If you’re unsure of the shape, practice on a flat surface. Just keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be perfect because it will look like a football with the final touches. Now, to make it really look like a football, use a round tip to add ‘laces’ onto the brown frosting.

Tip – If you don’t have pastry bags or decorating tips, use Ziplock bags. Cut the corners off to create a hole to pipe frosting out.

Don’t these look cute?! I could have stopped here, but I decided to add one more thing – football goal cupcake toppers.

Football goal cupcake topper

To create the goal post toppers, I used white and tan striped paper straws that were bent and glued together.

  • Bend 1″ of the tip to be perpendicular with the straw.
  • Measure 1 1/2″ and bend the straw to create a “c” shape for the top of the post.
  • Cut a piece of straw 2″ and add a diagonal cut to one end.
  • Glue the straight end of the 2″ straw to the middle of the “c” shape to create the post of the football goal.
  • Add topper to the cupcake.

And there you have the completed simple football cupcakes!

Other football themed cupcake options –

  • use a star tip to create grass and add the topper
  • add the topper to plain green frosting
  • frost entire top of cupcakes with chocolate frosting and add white laces
