How Much Frosting?
One can of whipped white frosting is more than enough to decorate 22 Christmas tree OR Santa Hat brownies. The frosting can also be divided into thirds to make white, green, and red frosting to decorate 11 trees and 11 hats.
How to Cut Christmas Brownies Triangles
Before getting started, once the brownies are cut and cooled, cut them into triangle shapes.
Flip out the cooled brownies from the baking pan onto a flat surface. The back of the brownie sheet should be facing up. Use a knife to cut off about 1/4″ of the short edges of the brownie sheet (this can be left on). Next, make guidelines to divide the brownie sheet into 4 equal quadrants (blue dot lines). After that, vertically divide the quadrants into three equal sections (yellow dot lines). Now, divide the three quadrants in half (white dot lines). Finally, use these guidelines to cut out triangle-shaped brownies. There should be 22 triangle-shaped brownies.
Tip
Flip cooled brownies out of the pan to make cutting easier. Make sure the brownies are cooled before cutting or it will stick to your knife. If the brownies crack or break in a small area, use store-bought chocolate cooke icing to patch it back together.
How to Make Christmas Brownies
Place all the brownies right side up on cookie sheets or trays. This will make it easier and more efficient to decorate.
Christmas Brownies – Christmas Trees
Step 1. Take a mini candy cane and gently push it into the bottom of the brownie triangle. It can help to place one hand flat on top of the brownie while you push the candy cane in with the other. This helps keep the brownie from splitting, especially if the brownies have nuts. Set aside.
Step 2. Take about 1/3 of a white frosting from a store-bought container and place it in a small mixing bowl. Mix in green gel or oil based food coloring until you get the green color you desire. If you bought or made green frosting, you can skip to step 3.
Step 3. Add the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.
Step 4. Pipe frosting in a zig-zag, like a garland, onto the brownie. Optional – add sparkle green gel frosting.
Step 5. Add Christmas sprinkles onto the green frosting. Optional – Add a star sprinle or light bulb candy to the top of the ‘christmas tree’ with a bit of frosting.
Christmas Brownies – Reindeer
Step 1. Add a bit of chocolate cookie icing to the point of the brownie.
Step 2. Place a red candy-coated chocolate round onto the cookie icing. This will be be reindeer nose.
Step 3. Next, add two dot of chocolate icing where you want to place the candy reindeer eyes.
Step 4. Add chocolate cookie icing to the back of a mini pretzel (just add the icing to the areas that touch the brownie) and place it onto the brownie to create the reindeer antlers.
Christmas Brownies – Santa Hats
Step 1. Take about 1/3 of a white frosting from a store-bought container and place it in a small mixing bowl. Mix in red gel or oil based food coloring until you get the red color you desire. If you bought or made red frosting, you can skip to step 2.
Step 2. Take a butter knife and spread a thin layer of red frosting onto the top of the brownie.
Step 3. Place a small mini marshmallow on the point of the brownie to create the top of the Santa hat.
Step 4. Add white frosting to a piping bag with a basketweave or flat (crumb coat) tip. Pipe frosting across the bottom of the Santa hat. If you are not adding shredded coconut, pipe the frosting on neatly. I didn’t worry about being too neat as I planned on covering the frosting with coconut flakes.
Step 5. Optional – carefully press on sweetened coconut flakes onto the white piped frosting to create a ‘fuzzy’ fur look to the Santa hat.
How Long Do These Keep?
The brownies are always best eaten the day they are made, but undecorated brownies will keep for up to 3 days in an airtight container. The Christmas tree and reindeer brownies should be made and eaten the day they are made because the pretzels and candy canes will absorb moisture from the brownies and become stale. Only the decorated Santa Hats can be made ahead of time and stored frosted in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
I hope you try these fun holiday-themed dessert brownies. These Christmas brownies are so easy to make and are sure to put a smile on everyone’s face!
