Dollar store giant Easter Egg - use felt cut out, foam core board, gemstones and paint.Spring is here and it’s time to decorate for Easter. If you still haven’t done so, I’ve got another easy Dollar Tree craft. Remember the Dollar Store Fall Owl? This time I wanted to use a Dollar Tree egg to make a large egg  for my mantel.

If you’re a crafter, you probably already have most of the supplies on-hand from other craft projects. For me, all I needed to pick-up was the Dollar Tree felt egg ($1) and foam core board (2 for $1) for a total project cost of $2.

Supplies:

  • Dollar Tree felt egg
  • paint in several colors
  • paint brushes
  • craft glue (optional)
  • ModPodge glitter (optional)
  • gem stones(optional)
  • foam board
  • utility knife
  • pencil or color pencils in the same color as your paint

Directions:

Trace outline of dollar store eggPlace the felt egg on the foam board and trace the outline of the egg.Cut out Easter EggUsing the utility knife, do a light score of the outlined egg – doing a light score helps keep the blade in place. Following the score line, make a second pass over the outline to cut out the egg.

Trace egg flowersPlace the felt egg over the foam cut-out and trace the inner flowers and decorations.

Tip – Use color pencils in the same shades of your chosen paints to hide the trace lines. paint Easter eggPaint in the traced shapes and a little outside of the traced lines. I forgot to take pictures, but I also painted the edge of the foam egg in the same color as the felt egg. Set aside and let dry. Add another coat if needed.

Tip – Do not over saturate the foam core with paint because this will cause the paper to ripple. Use thin coats of paint to add color. If you do not want to use paint, use felt pens to fill in the shapes.20150320_134634

While the paint on the foam core is drying, paint Mod Podge glitter onto the front of the felt egg. Set aside and let dry.

Tip – The Mod Podge glitter will go on white but dry clear. Add gems to the Easter egg

Glue the felt egg onto the painted foam egg.  Let dry. If you’re the impatient type, use your glue gun to glue down the egg. You can skip this part, but I like bling and added gemstones.

  1. What a gorgeous Easter decoration. I am nowhere as talented with an exacto knife as you are. Thanks for sharing at the This Is How We Roll Link Party at Organized 31.

  2. This is an awesome focal point for a mantel for Easter! Thank you for sharing with Idea Box link party! Can’t wait to see what you share this week 🙂

  3. Wow, that is GREAT!!!! I love quick, easy, and cute crafts. This one sure fits the bill for me. I have everything here even the egg left over from last year. I used a couple of the giant eggs last year to put in the bottom of large plant containers. So, I have it all and it can be done in one day.
Thank you for the step by step instructions along with pictures.

  4. Erlene, you always seem to have some very neat creative crafts. I love how you did the egg. I have a mantle but I did not decorated with eggs, just Spring colors.

  5. What a cute little egg! I’m going to pin this to do with my little cousins when they come over. They love crafts & Easter so this will be great! I’m stopping by from the Wednesday blog hop. I hope your having a great day!

    1. The painting/coloring portion is a great craft to do with kids. Just make sure they don’t saturate the foam board too much or the paper will pucker. If it does, just stop and let it dry and the puckering will reduce some.
