I know everyone is recovering from holiday overload, myself included, and it can be difficult to get back into a crafting mood. To help ease the transition to Valentine’s Day decorating, I’ll be sharing simple Valentine’s Day craft projects that are budget friendly and easy to create. And today’s DIY Valentine Heart Cupcake Topper is a project that only costs a few dollars and can be done in a few minutes.
DIY Valentine Heart Cupcake Topper
Supplies:
- toothpicks/skewers
- pipe cleaners – red & white
- glue gun
- scissors/wire cutter
Directions:
To make the heart, start by wrapping the end of a red pipe cleaner onto the tip of a toothpick. I used skewers cut into 3″ sections. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the toothpick two times.
Use your thumb to shape the first curve of the heart. To make the center dip of the heart, bend the pipe cleaner up.

Shape the other side of the heart.
Once you get the heart shape you like, wrap the end of the pipe cleaner around the stick twice and cut the end. Press the end of the pipe cleaner into the stick so that it doesn’t stick out. Optional – add a dab of glue to help keep the pipe cleaner heart in place. You can stop here or continue on to create an arrow.
Fold the tip of a white pipe cleaner onto itself. Where the end of the tip meets itself, bend up to create the point of the arrow.
Fold the pipe cleaner towards the center. When you reach the center point, loop the pipe cleaner up to create the arrow stem. Determine how long you want your arrow stem by comparing it to your heart width. Next, create the arrow end by following the same steps to create the arrow tip.
To finish the arrow, wrap the end of the pipe cleaner around the stem once and cut. Glue the arrow in an angle to the heart using small dabs of glue.
