DIY Painted Kitchen Plates - Add Whimsy to the Kitchen

Lately, I haven’t been doing too many DIY projects and decided that I needed to get a move on and start doing some of those wonderful projects that I’ve been pinning to all of my Pinterest boards. One project that I’ve always wanted to do was painted plates for the kitchen. I needed something to decorate the area above my kitchen cabinets and decided to do some DIY Painted Kitchen Plates.

Lucky for me, I’ve had these clear glass plates that have been sitting around just waiting to be painted. The only problem was that they had a lot of soap and water residue that needed to be taken care of. The first thing I did was to soak the plates in some hot water and vinegar. Next, I just wiped them down with a paper towel and had clean and clear plates. Wallah! Ready to start making some DIY Painted Kitchen Plates.

DIY Painted Kitchen Plates Materials:

  • Clear Glass Plates
  • Sharpie oil base pens in black and silver
  • Americana Gloss Enamels in black and white (Use any brand paint that is suited for glass painting)
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Pencil
  • PicMonkey
  • Printer/Paper
  • Picture hanging nails
  • Clear coat spray (optional)
  • E6000 (optional)
  • Soda Pop Tabs (optional)
  • Vinegar (optional)
  • Water (optional)

Directions:

STEP 1 (Optional)

Soak plates in vinegar/water

  • Clean your plates really well. Before painting, I soaked the plates in some vinegar and water to get rid of the foggy residue. Dry well. *This step may not be necessary if your plates are already prepped*

STEP 2

PicMonkey Plate Text

  • Decide what design you want on your plate and print it out. I chose a spoon from the internet and went to PicMonkey for the text. I chose to use Mission Script and typed it out the way I wanted it to appear on the plate. The size will depend on the size of your plate.
  • I reversed the text because I was painting the back of the plate. If you are painting the front, you do not need to reverse the text.  Save your work to your computer and print it out.

Step 3

Painting with the Sharpie

  • Cut around your chosen graphic and place it right side down on the front of your plate. *If you are painting the front of your plate, you would do the opposite*
  • Pump the tip of your oil based Sharpie pen until the tip becomes saturated. *Tip- Make sure you cap the pen if you shake it to mix the paint. This will prevent paint from dripping out*
  • Trace your graphic and fill it in with the Sharpie pen. Let dry. Bake in the oven at 200F for 15 minutes or let air dry for an entire day. Cool with the oven door open or place on something heatproof to cool. You may need to go over it again with the Sharpie pen to fill in some open spots. It may look a little rough, but it will look fine once everything is all painted.

Text painting

  • Cut around your chosen text and place it right side down on the front of the plate.
  • Take the Sharpie pen and trace over the text. Let this dry completely. You may want to go over some areas again. *Tip – position yourself directly above the plate and centered when tracing the text*
  • Add random dots around the edge of the plate with the tip of the Sharpie pen.  Bake in the oven at 200F for 15 minutes or let air dry for an entire day.

Step 4

Paint the back of plates

  • Paint the back of the plate with black gloss enamel.  Let dry.
  • Repeat with another coat until you are satisfied with the coverage. I did two coats. Bake at 200F for 20 minutes until the paint is dry. *The paint instructions uses a much higher temperature and longer bake time, but I didn’t want to over heat the glass plate and crack it*
  • Spray the back side with clear coat. Let dry.

Step 5

Soda Tab Hanger

  • Place a good amount of E6000 adhesive onto the back of the plate and place a soda tab directly into it. This will be the plate hanger. *This is optional, as you can hang your plate with a plate hanger, use a plate stand, or any other chosen method*

Step 6

Hanging Plates

  • Trace around plates and mark the position of the soda tabs.
  • Nail picture hanging nails into the wall.
  • Hang plates.

Painted Plates

If you want to create the white plate. Follow the same steps as the black plate. All I did differently was to free hand the oven mitten to fit around the text. I also chose to use a white background paint and black/silver wave lines on on the outer edge of the plate. Super easy and it doesn’t have to be perfect. The key here is to have fun making these DIY painted kitchen plates and to add some whimsy to the kitchen.
