Baking Soda Dough Gingerbread Ornaments

Ever since I made baking soda dough, I’ve been hooked. It’s such an easy dough to make and by adding a few tablespoons of cinnamon, it turns into the perfect baking soda gingerbread dough.

Supplies:

How to Make the Baking Soda Dough Gingerbread Ornaments

Step 1. Make the baking soda dough recipe and add at least 4T. of cinnamon. Add another tablespoon if you want the dough darker. It will become lumpy and the cinnamon/baking soda will look like it’s sticking and burning on the bottom pot, but don’t worry. As soon as the dough starts to come together (it may be a little sticky), scoop it onto the Silicone Baking Mat to cool. When it is just cool enough to handle, start to knead the dough to smooth out the clumps of cinnamon.

Creating Gingerbread Ornament Shapes

Step 2. Roll the dough to about 1/4″ thick. Cut out shapes. Cut off the end of a paperclip and insert into the top of each shape or use a straw/skewer to make a hole in the top of each shape.

Tip: If the dough edges are drying out, knead the dough again. Also, put a damp cloth over cut-out shapes to prevent cracking.

Step 3. Place cut-outs on a pan with parchment paper or Silpat. Bake at 200°F for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the ornaments are solid and hard (it can take up to 3-4 hours).

Tip: If you see a crack in the dough, knead it out again and re-cut. Even if you smooth out the crack with water, it WILL show up after baking. If needed, use a fine grit sandpaper to smooth out rough edges.

How to Make Baking Soda Gingerbread Snowman Ornament

Use black puff paint and outline the hat. Sprinkle black glitter over the paint and shake off excess. Let this dry for about an hour. Next, outline and fill in the snowman shape with white puff paint (I used gallery glass). Sprinkle white glitter over the paint, shake off the excess and let dry for an hour. Add black buttons with black puff paint and let dry. For the scarf, I cut off the edge off a pom-pom ribbon and glued it on the snowman neck.

Outline the gingerbread men with white puff paint (I used gallery glass), sprinkle with white glitter, shake off excess and let dry. Use black puff paint to buttons, sprinkle with black glitter and shake off excess. Add a bow tie and eyes with black puff paint. Last, add a mouth with red puff paint and let the entire piece dry.

Outline and fill the top of the stockings with white gallery glass, sprinkle with white glitter, shake off excess and let dry. Outline and fill in the remaining portion of the stockings with red puff paint, sprinkle with red glitter, shake off excess and let dry. Leave the ornament as-is or decorate more. Other options would be to create words, add dots, or patterns onto each stocking.

    1. Oh no. I’ve had mine regular baking soda creations for a few years already with no issues. Too bad the mice got to yours 🙁 Was there any type of applesauce or sweet food item added to the recipe? I’ve seen cinnamon dough made with applesauce, but I was afraid of how it would hold up.
