Create this simple Dollar Store Fall Owl for some fall family crafting fun!
Did I tell you that I LOVE owls? Well I do 🙂 So when I found a plain brown felt owl at the dollar store, I knew it was screaming to be something more. Thus, in the spirit of the contest, I decided to create a dollar store fall owl for the front door. This is craft can be made with about $5 and probably less if you have some of the supplies already on hand.
Dollar Store Fall Owl
Supplies
- One large dollar store felt owl
- One 50 pc. package of dollar store fall leaves
- One package of dollar store glitter glue
- Small angled paint brush
- Twine
- Hot glue
- Hole puncher
Directions
Plug in your glue gun and let it heat up. Gather up your felt owl, leaves, glitter glue, and twine.
Following the shape and curve of the wing, start gluing the first row of leaves onto the felt owl (I used 6 leaves). Glue the second row of leaves down (I used 5 leaves).
Tip: the leaves a fairly thin, so use only a dot of hot glue to glue down the top and bottom of the leaves.
Take three leaves and glue them down for the ears. Glue one leaf on each feet.
For the beak, take one leaf and cut it into three pieces as shown above. Next, cut the middle piece in half for the beak and glue in onto the owl.
Now, you could stop here and make a loop with the twine to hang the owl, but I felt that this owl needed some bling.
Areas to highlight with glitter:
- Trace the head and body with a line of orange glue glitter
- Trace the scalloped openings on the body with both orange glue glitter (top) and gold glue glitter (bottom)
- Fill eyes with either gold or orange glue glitter
- Trace features on the face with gold glue glitter and highlight with lines of orange glue glitter
- Paint orange glitter glue all over the body and the shoulders
- Run a line of gold glitter on the top of the beak to cover the cut end (not shown)
Tip: There is no right or wrong way to do this part. Decorate your owl the way you see fit and make it your own design.
Use the hole puncher and make a single hole near the top middle of the head. String twine through the hole and make a loop for hanging, leaving the twine ends long. Start gluing leaves on both sides of the twine to cover the loop knot and the loose ends.
*The length of the twine will depend on how long you want your owl hanging from your hook.*
Tadaah! Now you have a finished dollar store fall owl for under $5!

If you have a cut machine, you can probably purchase an svg file and cut a large one yourself. Another option would be to purchase laser cut wood ones, but those would cost more.

Aww…I think I’d have withdrawals if there wasn’t a dollar store near me…lol. You could always make your own felt owl and cut it out from a large piece of felt

This is so cool! I’m not horribly crafty, but I really think I could do this. Fall is my favorite season, but we are living in Okinawa, Japan now via a military overseas move. So we don’t really get a fall here. I think this would be the perfect thing to hang outside our apartment door.
