Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, can you believe it?! So today, I’m sharing one of my favorite recipes to celebrate the day – Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes with Kahlua Buttercream Frosting!

This is a delicious and super easy recipe that I grew up eating and is one of my favorite desserts…EVER! Originally, this was a cake recipe, but for Valentine’s Day, I decided to make this into frosted chocolate Kahlua cupcakes!

Of course, if you want to skip the Kahlua frosting (skip if serving to kids), the cupcakes are fabulous on their own. Seriously, my family can devour two dozen in two days!

How to make moist and delicious chocolate Kahlua cupcakes with Kahlua buttercream frosting.

Ingredients

Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes

  • 1 Box Devil's Food Cake Mix
  • 1 - 3oz. box Hershey's instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 3 T. Kahlua coffee liquer
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (substitute with chopped pecans)

Kahlua Buttercream Frosting

  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup butter flavored shortening
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 T. cocoa powder
  • 4 T. Kahlua coffee liquer
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions

Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line cupcake baking pan with liners. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix and instant pudding.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together sour cream, oil, Kahlua, eggs, and vanilla. Add to the cake mixture and combine well. Mix in the walnuts and chocolate chips just until combined.
  4. Fill cupcake liners with batter 3/4 full.
  5. Bake 20 minutes or until set. Let cool and serve OR frost with Kahlua Buttercream Frosting.

Kahlua Buttercream Frosting

  1. In a large bowl, mix together butter, shortening, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and Kahlua.
  2. Add to piping bag with star tip and frost cupcakes.
